The Sewer Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town's sanitary sewer collection system.  The Sewer Superintendent works with the Engineering Division under the direction of the Public Works Director.

Septic System and cesspool maintenance information can be found on the Water Department's Wastewater Managment page at: http://www.northkingstown.org/departments/water/wastewater-management.

Originally constructed by the Navy during World War II, the wastewater treatment facility in North Kingstown is now run by the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC).  The facility provides treatment to the businesses within the Quonset Business Park and the West Davisville Industrial Park.  It also serves several areas in North Kingstown outside the parks through its collection system.

In 2010, the Town entered into an agreement with QDC to take over ownership and responsibility for all sewers in public rights of way serving areas outside the two industrial parks.  This agreement also allowed the Town to obtain capacity for additional wastewater flows to the treatment facility.

The Town completed a Wastewater Facility Plan in 2012.  The Town is currently in the process of constructing new sanitary sewers to serve properties in the Post Road south corridor.  Other potential future projects include Wickford business district and Post Road north of Route 403.

Chapter 20 Article III - Sanitary Sewers of the Code of Ordinances defines the Town's power and authority to construct, maintain and operate sewerage works.

Sewer extensions and connections:
Sewer extensions and connections must be made by licensed, qualified contractors and permitted by the Sewer Division of the Public Works Department or the State of Rhode Island.
See http://webserver.rilin.state.ri.us/Statutes/TITLE5/5-65.3/5-65.3-4.HTM

Under new RI State statutes, if a drainlayer is licensed in North Kingstown and the license is active, drainlayer can install sanitary sewer connections and does not need to provide a "State" license to work in Town.  However, drainlayer has 180 days to file for State license and be exempt from testing requirement in order to obtain the license.  After the grandfather period, those licensed with a municipality who did not file for State license within that 180 day period will then have to take test.

Any work in the Town right-of-way requires an Excavation Permit from the Engineering office.  Click here for Excavation Permit infomation and application.

Please note for NK sewer locations:  This utility is not a part of the DigSafe program.  Contact the Engineering Department at (401) 268-1500, x640 or x642 to have any public sewer locations marked.

Drainlayers
A Drainlayer repairs, installs or alters drains to a wastewater system.  All drainlayers performing work on a sanitary sewer in North Kingstown must be licensed by the Town or State See below for information on how to obtain a drainlayer license and a list of licensed drainlayers for North Kingstown.
